Our Roots

OUR story

Bill and Oscar met in 2017 as Oscar needed an assessor for his skill section of the Duke of Edinburgh award. Soon after Bill offered him a Saturday job at his family forge, Trapp Forge.

Trapp Forge was set up by Ron Carter (pictured left) in 1960, in Simonstone, near Burnley. Over the next three decades he honed his skill as a blacksmith, creating a local, national and then international name for Trapp Forge. His most high profile customer was Her Majesty the Queen.

It should be noted that Ron's Wife Shiela was a great designer who studied at the Royal College of Art and without her drawings Trapp Forge would not have been the great success it was.

After his father died in 1999 Bill and Chris took over the forge. As well as learning from his farther, Bill has traveled to learn off a variety of different smiths in Europe as well as Australia. During his time in France he did some work Imanuelle Ungaro, the fashion designer. (pictured below).

Age 14, 2016

At age 13 years old Oscar decided to build a forge in his garden after watching a few YouTube videos, convincing himself it was a good idea. He started off by literally digging a hole in the ground, making his own charcoal and scavenging for steel around the farm. Then with his mum's hair dryer and dad's claw hammer he started forging.

In 2020 when Covid hit Oscar was in his final year of A levels at Burnley College. He was sent home with nothing to do so he decided to start his blacksmithing business full time as he had no interest in going to university.

He and Bill kept in touch since the closure of Trapp Forge and soon found themselves working together again on larger projects that needed an extra pair of hands. This inevitably lead to the creation of Carter & Duck Blacksmiths Ltd.
